In Conversation — with Alice Lines

This Mother's Day, we begin a series of conversations with women we look to - for their instinct, their perspective, their style and the way they choose to show up.

A mother and modern muse who needs no introduction and one of the women we look to, Homestyle editor Alice Lines shares with True what she comes back to, what she reaches for and what pieces feel like her.

What do you come back to, again and again?
Simple, structured seperates that work regardless of what's on my to-do list. I like to feel put together, but I'd rather my work do the talking than what I'm wearing.

What does something have to feel like for you to wear it often?
It has to feel like it belongs on my body — the right weight, the right cut. When something fits the way it should, getting dressed stops being a decision.

When you're getting dressed, what do you reach for without thinking?
A tailored pant and slim-fit top. The combination of something soft with something sharp is my default, and a blazer does a lot of the work. With a small person to wrangle before school, getting dressed needs to be fast, and this combination never lets me down.

What stays in rotation, season after season?
Wool. I’m knitwear obsessed. It works for days at home, packs well for travel, and natural fibres are always a win.

Outside of what you wear - what helps you feel like yourself quickly?
Getting outdoors has become a more distinct part of my life since moving to the South Island. I didn’t anticipate how much a morning walk in the hills would do for me. It keeps everything else on track.

And finally - what has motherhood brought into focus for you - in your style, your instinct and your perspective?
In the early days of motherhood, my perspective on style shifted more than I expected. Up until that point you're defined by the other things you do, your work, your interests, and adding mother into the mix adds another layer to who you are. Your sense of style recalibrates too. As the years have gone on, I've grown into a new version of myself, one that's more decisive about what I want. My wardrobe has become a tool for showing up on the chaotic days, the busy days, the uninspired days.
